The Breathing Ritual
Stephanie Thiersch restages ‘The Breathing Ritual’ from her production ‘ARCHIPEL – EIN SPEKTAKEL DER VERMISCHUNGEN’:https://mouvoir.de/projekte/archipel.html. The large-scale production was created together with composer Brigitta Muntendorf and was coproduced by the Ruhrtriennale 2020 and the festival Theater der Welt 2021 with Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, where it had its world premiere on a sculpture by architect Sou Fujimoto in 2021. In its high-energy 18-minute ritual, dancers of different backgrounds and ages come together. The ritual is based on a complex breathing composition, based on the voices of the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, and it unites 40 bodies in a breathing rhythm. The recurring Breathing Ritual places the breath at the centre as a symbol of connection and equality.
