Six performers confront pervasive authoritarian patterns: the small, everyday gestures at the contested garden fence and the global movements at territorial borders. Their bodies become a form of protest, their voices an instrument against the fetishisation of control, the occupation of free spaces, and the might of the stronger.

How can self-assertion succeed in times of colonial fantasies and the abuse of power? For many years, choreographer Stephanie Thiersch has been exploring the boundaries between choreography, concert, musical theatre and installation in her work. In ANGELS OF ANARCHY, she explores how resistance emerges through a blend of contemporary music, spoken word and house dance. Accompanied by stories from suburban gardens by the Austrian writer Kathrin Röggla, polyrhythms, Afrobeats and throat singing by the South African composer and healer Monthati Masebe, she and her company MOUVOIR once again break down genre boundaries with ANGELS OF ANARCHY.

The title is borrowed from the sculpture “Angel of Anarchy” by the English surrealist Eileen Agar.
