In her work, Stephanie Thiersch searches for communities and repeatedly enables unusual alliances with artists from different backgrounds. In her new research project #UNDEFINED at the Bundeskunsthalle, the renowned choreographer explores the social aspect of family structures, in particular the family of choice, through ballroom, contemporary dance, singing and live trumpet/electronics.
What does it mean when intimacy, care and support in freely chosen relationships replace familiar family conventions? Non-heterosexual family models in particular are regarded as role models here, and in the 1980s, they promoted the ‘Family of Choice’ movement in the context of Ballroom in the USA and turned the family into a political project. Georgina Philp, aka European Mother of the Iconic House of Saint Laurent, is a trailblazer of the ballroom scene in Germany and acts as co-choreographer for #UNDEFINED. Together with Black Pearl de Almeida Lima, a multidisciplinary Afro-Latin American trans dancer, the countertenor, dancer and Stephanie Thiersch’s long-time companion Julien Ferranti and the exceptional trumpeter, composer and performer Pablo Giw, she enters an imaginary space of diverse relationships.
